I have long justifiably denounced the wealthy Koch Brothers, Charles and David, for being a secretive, scheming pair dedicated to the destruction of all things progressive, including such popular, beneficial, and necessary programs as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the minimum wage (among many others). With their inherited wealth – bothare billionaires – and their insane and wholly impractical Libertarian ideology, they have been hell-bent on eliminating labor unions and subverting our government to fit their own selfish wants for nearly 40 long tears. Their Koch Industries conglomeration of many different companies is one of the top polluters in the nation, yet rather than even trying to clean up their act, the profit-at-any-cost Koch Brothers’ main focus has been trying to end government regulation (which they regard as interference in their business).
Writing in the June 28 edition of AlterNet, investigative reporter Alex Kotch has written part one of a two part revealing piece which exposes senior brother Charles’s tawdry efforts to corrupt our system of higher education. Entitled “Inside Charles Koch’s Plot to Hijack Universities Across America and Spread His Radical ‘Free Market’ Propaganda,” it details step by step the sly ways this evil man has been going about this subversion. Kotch writes, “Over the past decade, Koch has funded colleges and universities to bend them in his direction… $10 million for George Mason University’s School of Law, which will be renamed after late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia; $2 million to Western Carolina University to establish a free-market center; and over $4.1 million approved for future payment to several schools according to the [Koch] foundation’s 2014 990 tax form.”
Even more alarmingly, Kotch continues, “Some of these grants come with strings attached. At Florida State University, the initial memorandum of understanding between the Charles Koch Foundation (CKF) and the school’s economics department gave the foundation control over hiring decisions andthe curriculum.” This is utterly amazing and disgusting, considering that neither Koch nor his underlings at the foundation are qualified or certified instructors! Kotch goes on to show how, using his bulging and vastly overstuffed wallet, the sneaky Koch has been basically installing his own approved economics professors at a large number of universities across the country. Journalist Kotch goes on to show how these installed appointees coordinate and disseminate Koch’s free market nonsense.
Alex writes, “In April, activist group UnKoch My Campus attended the latest conference of the Association of Private Enterprise Education (APEE), self-described as ‘an association of teachers and scholars from colleges and universities, public policy institutes, and industry with a common interest in studying and supporting the system of private enterprise.’ Left out of this description are details about who these figures really are: Koch-funded academics, ‘experts’ from Koch-funded think tanks and big business representatives.”
Kotch goes on by writing, “The Koch academic network has ‘nearly 5,000 scholars,’ according to Ryan Stowers, Vice President of CKF. Hundreds flock to the APEE conference very year.
The group heralds its ability to facilitate ‘communication and cooperation between university and business communities,’ encourage ‘the creation of chairs and centers of private enterprise in colleges and universities’ and ‘serve in advisory capacities to governmental bodies dealing with economic policy, taxation, and other issues on national, state, and local levels.’”
Kotch continues, not too surprisingly, by revealing that “APEE is based out of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, overseen by J.R. Clark, the school’s Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise and APEE’s secretary and treasurer. The university received a $27,000 grant from CKF in 2012.”
More shockingly he next reveals, “What we know from conference recordings — #Kochileaks — by UnKoch senior researcher Ralph Wilson and UnKoch collaborator Jerry Funt is striking: This network of Koch-funded, laissez-faire-minded professors, think tank researchers and big-business representatives meet every year and share how to take over university departments, establish free-market centers and divert university and state resources into free-market programs.”
This fabulous article goes on to discuss how numerous other copy-cat groups have also sprung up over the years, all funded by similar government-hating billionaires and/or having received funds from Koch. Many of the hired “academics” at these schools and/or the Koch created or influenced think tanks that have also come into being have been influencing state and federal legislators by lobbying, actually writing and submitting pro-business, anti-worker legislation, and have appeared on corporate-owned media talk shows to influence public opinion. In a frightening number of cases, some of these submissions have even been passed into law! What is most disgusting of all is that, once these Koch-contaminated schools come into being, they are encouraged to network with other Koch-contaminated schools and think tanks, thereby aiding the growth of these abominations. The end result will surely be the virtual enslavement of the American worker, with further stagnation and shrinkage in wages and the increasing of our already far too high disparity in wealth. This is dangerous, unnecessary, and completely avoidable. It is also a huge act of sedition! However, unless American workers begin to wake up and start to overthrow this form of economic tyranny, this enslavement will certainly occur.
Several years ago in this blog, I featured a piece on the devilish Koch Brothers-supported organization known as ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council). This nefarious group actually writes pro-business, anti regulation bills and supplies them directly to Representatives and Senators to be enacted into law. The group holds secret conventions twice a year to create these drafts, and neither the public nor the press are invited. Only billionaires and other members of the 1% are permitted to come. Is it any wonder that we, the MAJORITY 99%, are increasingly being shut out of our own government and that the rich are continually getting richer at an ever-increasing rate while the rest of us keep losing more ground? We have the greedy and sinister Koch Brothers and their equally greedy billionaire allies to thank for this! They are also to blame for the corrupting of the GOP, turning it into the Tea Party infested, reactionary Republican Party. As Alex Kotch points out, “The tax-slashing and regulation-killing policies that become law may align with libertarianism. But, conveniently, they boost Koch Industries’ profits, leading to the combined $87 billion possessed by Charles and David Koch.”
That is why we MUST STOP the Koch Brothers’ efforts to subvert our democracy!
