Hello and happy start of a new week, readers. While many have been critical of Julian Assange and the way he has spilled a huge number of sensitive, secret government documents to the world press via WikiLeaks, I have long hailed him as being a hero dedicated to making governments be more transparent and less secretive. However, thanks to my friend BURR DEMING (our resident master podcaster), I am now rethinking that position. I continue to believe that whistleblowers are necessary in a democracy, but perhaps Mr. Assange was a bit hasty and even reckless in the way he chose to make some of his releases…thank you, Burr, for providing us this info, and I speak for all in saying we are glad your son escaped harm!
In today’s podcast, Burr relates the gripping, nervous anxiety he felt as a father when communications with his son serving in Afghanistan became interrupted by a major Taliban attack, which may have been precipitated by one of the WikiLeaks document dumps. This is a difficult subject for me, as I know our own government has at times lied to us about its national security concerns and we have used collateral damage as an excuse to justify murderous military actions we have undertaken that have killed many innocents. But Burr illustrates how rash disclosures can also jeopardize the lives of our sons and daughters who aren’t deliberate perpetrators of international intrigue and are only doing their duty…
Burr tells us, “He was at the very start, as he is still, an anti-privacy activist. We know of such people, the sort whose spam we have learned to delete before we lose our credit information to some teenage thrill seeker…
He is accused of leaking state secrets because he hates legitimate exercise of national security. The accusation is not true.
In reality, Mr. Assange is much worse.”
