COUNTDOWN: We are duty-bound to tell you that a horrible 1,080 days are still left in this thoroughly rotten and corrupt misadministration’s term in office…
Happy first Monday of this second month, everybody! The United States has long prided itself on being a democratic nation, where qualified voters are free to choose their leaders in free elections. Voting rights have long been considered an essential element of our democracy, even though insecure and often snide persons have conspired numerous times in our history to deny certain individuals the right to vote. First, only free white men were allowed this privilege. Women were denied until 1920! Then, slaves were denied. Then it was freed blacks, particularly in the South after the Civil War, In every case, those opposing suffrage were soundly defeted, and slowly but surely more and more people of many diverse backgrounds were granted this precious right to vote.
It seems that in many eras of our history, forces have risen up to oppose the right to vote for certain groups, People were even lynched and strung up on trees occasionally to prevent them from voting. Today, certain segments of the reactionary, CON-servative Republican Party are posing a distinct threat to certain groups whom they correctly fear will vote against them.
In today’s effort, our master podcaster Burr Deming recalls the struggles of a number of those who were determined to vote, and shows us their courage to oppose the various agents of conservatism throughout time who actively tried to deny them that very precious right.
Burr says, “Voting rights are often debated as the conflicting rights of political parties to fair competition. Let’s consider the radical idea that voting rights do not belong to political groups, but to people. And that the price paid has often been blood.”
